Woodvale - Spring 1889 - Maple Avenue

This interesting picture shows the work being done to install trolley track in the Woodvale section of Johnstown along Maple Avenue. Little did they know that a few short weeks later - Woodvale would be wiped off the face of the earth.

I am intrigued by this photo. I lost half of my "Tross" family in the Great Flood of 31 May 1889. John William Tross together with his wife and 7 children were killed in the flood. They lived at 39 Maple Avenue in Woodvale. Does anyone have an idea how one might determine the addresses of these houses at the trolley installation? Regards, Steve Dixon, San Francisco

Steven,

Judging from the picture - I'd say this is the end more heading towards Conemaugh. Wish I could be of more help - Lisa

Looks to me like the picture is facing homes on Plum Street. The tracks would be built leading to Woodvale Ave. which would be in the background. Maple Ave. would be where the tracks are being laid in the foreground.
