Early View of the 8th Ward

This is from a reader from the Vintage Johnstown Facebook page. The photographer is standing on the hill behind Memorial Hospital looking towards Cypress School which is the large building in the center of the picture. U.S. Steel - Lorain Division is in the upper right.

Actually that is the Osborne street school . Cypress street school was in Moxham. That house in the foreground is the old Akers homestead. Akers Street was named after him. As Rose Street was named after his sister who was the first head nurse at Memorial Hospital. You have posted a poster from Akers and Baumer meat market in the past. He perished in the 1889 flood, and that poster hangs in the Johnstown Flood Museum.
